Basketball is one of the world's most popular and widely viewed sports and one of the most enthusiastic and competitive in university sports.

The game has many individual techniques for displaying skill—ball-handling, shooting, passing, dribbling, dunking, shot-blocking and rebounding.

In Coimbra, the top basketball clubs are AAC with strong results in the past years in male basketball competition and Olivais F.C in female basketball with some National Championships wins in the past.

In the last EUG held in Rijeka in 2016 the competition was won in the men´s tournament by the Vytautas Magnus University, from Lithuania, and in the women´s tournament by the University of Zagreb from Croatia.
